Routine Well Care for Your Pet

Routine Well Care for Your Pet

by Rebecca Gore / Sunday, 06 October 2013 / Published in Prevention

We all know the importance of having routine check- ups for ourselves but did you know that it is just as important for your pet? Our pets are not able to tell us when they feel minor changes to their bodies. They cannot tell us that they have formed a new mass, have a cavity, or have developed cataracts. They rely on us to find and treat these issues.

“Routine” well-care provides Dr. Gore with the opportunity to make sure that your pet is doing well and to learn about any new health concerns that your pet may have developed. It is important to realize that not all health issues are visible and early on, you may not notice any changes in your pet’s behavior.

When performing well-care exams, Dr. Gore is performing a detailed head-to-tail physical. She looks for changes in the eyes, ears, teeth, and skin; listens to the heart and lungs; checks for masses and changes in those already present; palpates the abdominal organs; checks the spine and joints, lymph nodes, pulses, and anal glands. She also discusses behavior and any concerns you may have regarding your pet.

Remember, your pet relies on you to make informed decisions about his or her care and to do what is best. Routine well-care visits are an important step in being able to diagnose and prevent potential health issues. Early detection of many issues makes treatment more successful. Call for your well- care visit today!
