Tips for Successful Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas and ticks can be a huge annoyance for pet owners and a major source of discomfort for pets. In areas where winter climates have been mild, flea and tick populations can rise exponentially making these pests difficult to control. Here are some suggestions to make this process a little easier and more successful.

    • Choose an appropriate method of flea and or tick control for your lifestyle, for example:
      • Do you hike or walk with your dog in areas that are wooded or have tall grass?
      • Does your dog swim?
      • Do you have multiple pets?
      • Do you have both cats and dogs?
      • Are any of your pets allergic to fleas?
      • Treat all of the pets in your household. The most common mistake people make is to treat only their dogs because their cats do not go outside. Keep in mind, fleas and ticks can be carried into the home on shoes and other clothing as well as on the dog’s coat. They will seek out a host and untreated pets are ideal.
      • Use your flea and tick control regularly. Do not assume that because you no longer see fleas, you should stop treatment. The reason you are not seeing fleas is Because of the treatment.
      • Follow the package instructions for application or dosing exactly. For example, topical medications need to be applied directly to the skin, not the coat. If you are uncertain of how to use the product properly, call us for advice.
    • If you are experiencing a serious infestation in your home or yard, you will need to treat these areas. There are products that can be safely used in the home or yard i thought about this. Call us for recommendations. (Remember to remove your vacuum cleaner bag and place it in an outdoor receptacle after vacuuming your home.)
