Dogs and cats naturally shed their coats to allow for new hair to grow in. This typically happens twice a year in the spring and in the fall. While the changes in seasons can cause an animal to shed their coat, increased shedding can also be a sign of a medical condition or nutritional deficiency.
7 Tips for Home
- Brush, brush, brush your pet! Brushing is the best thing that you can do to keep your home and car hair free! Brush consistently for at least 15 minutes every day! Brushing loosens the hair and allows the dead hair to fall out.
- Feed your pet a healthy diet. They are what they eat! Your pet’s coat is a reflection of the food that they eat. Try feeding a food that is high in protein.
- Cover furniture and car seats. Furniture throws and car seat covers are a great way to help keep upholstery hair free.
- Vacuum often. Vacuuming your home and your car can be tedious; however, it is the best way to keep your surroundings hair free.
- Bathe your pet occasionally during times when shedding is more prevalent. Bathing will loosen the dead hair and allow it to fall out. Use an aloe or oatmeal based shampoo as they are gentle and much more soothing to the skin.
- Use a de-shedding brush. We recommend the Furminator De-Shedding Brush or the Zoom Groom De-Shedding Brush.
- Have regular wellness exams. There are many diseases that can affect skin condition and the coat of an animal. Regular wellness exams from your veterinarian will help to identify any problems early and provide opportunities for more effective treatment.
